About The Community School - Baltimore
The Community School is a small academic and mentoring high school in the Remington neighborhood of Baltimore, operating out of a traditional city rowhouse at 2939-41 Huntingdon Ave. The school keeps total enrollment to no more than 22 students, and classes mix several grade levels in the same room, so the course rotation changes from year to year. Students enroll between ages 13 and 16 after completing 8th grade, and the program runs as a full college-prep track rather than a special-education or therapeutic setting. Staff are direct that the school accommodates young people who learn better with a small class and more individual attention, including students who struggled or were under-challenged elsewhere, but it does not provide special-education services or support for students who need an IEP or 504 plan.
Academically the program is demanding. Students are expected to earn above 80%, and only grades of 70% or higher count toward graduation credit. The core curriculum spans English language arts and writing (including a college writing course), an individualized math sequence that runs from basic skills up through college-level math, several sciences (physical science, biology, chemistry, earth science), and a full social studies sequence covering world geography, U.S. history, U.S. government, and world history. Health, life skills, technology, physical education, and college and career prep round out the schedule, along with a required extended-day independent study block for one-on-one instruction.
Beyond the core classes, students take part in a weekly student-run news broadcast, a Creative Writing seminar, an American Sign Language seminar, a climate seminar focused on Baltimore, and a recurring "Conversation with" speaker series. Juniors and seniors in good standing can take college courses through dual-enrollment partnerships with the Community College of Baltimore County and the University of Baltimore, and students can also earn credit through CLEP exams. The school leans heavily on community involvement, with adult sponsors and a wide roster of visiting artists, professors, and professionals supporting the students.
Admission starts with an online pre-application, followed by a shadow day (7:30 to 2:45), a full application, a one-on-one interview with the Head of School, and a meeting with the student and parents or guardians. On acceptance, families complete admissions forms and pay a $50 nonrefundable registration fee and a $100 book deposit, then submit transcripts, vaccine records, and a birth certificate. Baltimore School for the Arts
Baltimore School for the Arts (BSA) is a public high school in downtown Baltimore for students who want to train seriously in the arts. Founded in 1979 as part of Baltimore City Public Schools, it sits in the historic Alcazar building on Cathedral Street in the Mount Vernon neighborhood and serves grades 9 through 12. Admission works differently than at most schools. Students audition and interview in their field of interest, whether that is visual art, film, music, stage design and production, theatre, or dance. Acceptance is based solely on that audition and interview, with no academic criteria, so talent and potential matter more than grades or test scores. Auditions are held each January for 8th and 9th graders, and of roughly 1,000 students who audition each year, about 115 are offered a spot. Once enrolled, students split the day between a full college-preparatory academic program and intensive training in their art form, taught by working professional artists. The school keeps a strong academic support system in place and partners with major Baltimore institutions including the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Center Stage, the Hippodrome Foundation, and the Walters Art Museum. Its campus includes a recital hall, music practice rooms, art and dance studios, a film editing lab, and a black box theatre. As part of the public school system, BSA is tuition-free for Baltimore City residents. Students who live outside the city pay tuition, listed at $10,000 per year for the 2023 to 2024 school year. The school enrolls about 430 high school students. BSA also runs TWIGS, a free after-school and Saturday arts program for roughly 550 children in grades 2 through 8, which introduces younger students to the same training and feeds into the high school.
