Overview

Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is a co-ed Catholic school in Essex, Maryland (Baltimore County) that serves students from Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 on a single campus. Founded in 1927, the school describes itself as the only co-ed PreK to Grade 12 private Catholic school in Baltimore County. It operates as an Archdiocesan Collaborative School (ACS) under the Archdiocese of Baltimore and follows the Archdiocese curriculum, which spans lower school (PreK to 5th), middle school (6th to 8th), and high school (9th to 12th). The school is accredited through Cognia, having met the requirements of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Council on Accreditation and School Improvement, with the Archdiocese completing a system-wide accreditation review every five years.

Enrollment for 2025-2026 is 598 students. Class sizes and ratios vary by level: early education (PreK-3) averages around 20 students with teacher ratios from 1 to 6 up to 1 to 10, elementary averages 23 with ratios from 1 to 10 in the youngest grades to 1 to 24 in grades 3 to 5, middle school averages 24 at a 1 to 8 ratio, and the high school averages 14 at a 1 to 12 ratio. The school reports that 95% of students go on to college, and the 53 graduates in the Class of 2025 earned a combined $10 million in scholarships. Technology is built into each level, including one-to-one device access in grades K through 5, Chromebooks in middle school, and interactive screens in classrooms.

For students who need extra help, the Student Services Department runs a Student Assistance Plan (SAP) process led by a licensed special educator. The SAP team reviews and creates individualized plans that provide classroom accommodations, teacher collaboration, and ongoing communication with families for students needing additional academic or behavioral support. This support structure is relevant to families seeking a faith-based setting for children with language-based learning disabilities or twice-exceptional profiles, though parents should confirm fit directly with admissions. A school counselor provides individual and small-group sessions plus social-emotional learning lessons (covering friendship skills, empathy, conflict resolution, and managing emotions), and the school uses the FRIENDZY relationship-skills program and Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS). High school counselors also guide juniors and seniors through the college application process.

Beyond academics, the school offers a before and after school care program for families with students in grades K to 8, a school nurse, Career Day for grades K to 8, and recurring well-being initiatives such as Anti-Bullying Week and Mental Health Week. Community service participation is reported at 100%. Families can inquire or apply through the school's admissions pages.

St Stephens Christian Academy

Essex, MD
Ages 2-5

St. Stephen's Creative Learning Center (also presented as St. Stephens Christian Academy) is a non-profit private Christian school at 1525 Old Eastern Ave in Essex, Maryland. It was established in 2005 with help from the former pastor of St. Stephen's A.M.E. Church, who recruited a former school principal to build the program. It began with a Kindergarten class of six students and now teaches Kindergarten through 5th grade, with stated plans to expand to 8th grade. The school is a member of ACSI (the Association of Christian Schools International) and is governed by a Board of Directors along with parents of the student body. The center runs three tracks. The Pre-Academy accepts children from 6 weeks old through Pre-K4. The Christian Academy covers Kindergarten through 5th grade. Out of School Time programming provides before and after care from 7:00am to 8:00am and 3:00pm to 5:30pm, Monday through Friday. During the school year, arrival is at 8:30am, lunch is at noon, and dismissal is at 3:00pm (children not picked up by 3:15pm move into the Enrichment Academy at an hourly fee). A summer program (the Summer Scholar / Summer Enrichment program) mixes educational activities, games, and arts and crafts. The school emphasizes small class sizes, a low student-to-teacher ratio, and individualized attention, which fits families whose children benefit from more one-on-one support, and the curriculum pairs academics with Christian teaching organized around four core values: Knowledge, Spirituality, Understanding, and Civility. As a non-profit supported by tuition, the St. Stephen's A.M.E. Church, and charitable donations, it positions its tuition as among the lowest in the Essex area, with payment plans available annually, semi-annually, monthly, bi-weekly, or weekly. Scholarships, grants, and child care vouchers are accepted (the site points families to money4childcare.com to check eligibility). Enrollment runs through an application, a registration fee, entrance testing, and an interview with the Administrator. Students entering must be five years old by December 31, and the school requires proof of age (birth certificate), documented immunizations per Maryland law, and a completed physical examination form. For details or to arrange an on-campus tour, the school can be reached at (443) 772-3447.
