The Community School - Teaneck

Our high school division opened in 1976 with three teachers and two small classrooms, growing out of the Community School founded in a single room in 1968. Today The Community High School in Teaneck enrolls about 185 students in grades 9 to 12 who have learning disabilities, dyslexia and attention deficits. We are a nonprofit private day school approved for special education by both the New Jersey and New York State Departments of Education. Classes average six to seven students. Faculty trained in Orton-Gillingham deliver daily language lessons, and the Wilson Reading Program supports decoding, fluency and spelling. Speech-language therapy, occupational therapy and counseling are provided on site, along with reading and math tutorials, and each student receives a Chromebook with text-to-speech and dictation tools. A transition coordinator and school social worker guide each student's college and career planning. Electives include coding, drama, film study, photography and yearbook. Our teams compete in soccer, tennis, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball and golf, using two gyms and the Kaplan Family Field of Dreams across the street, and clubs range from billiards and bowling to chess.
