SOAR Special Needs

Cedar Trails Exploration Center houses two very different programs for De Soto USD 232 families: the district's early childhood preschool and CTEC CAPS, our career and technical education center for high school students. Our preschool serves children ages 3 to 5 who live in USD 232 or whose parents work for the district. All classes are half-day, with morning and afternoon sessions, and classrooms hold 10 to 20 children with 2 to 4 staff members. Families enroll through fee-based, grant-funded (free) or special education placements, and bus transportation is available for grant-funded seats. We also provide special education evaluations and services for children not yet kindergarten eligible, with IEP teams making individual decisions. Our support staff includes special education teachers, speech pathologists, school psychologists, occupational and physical therapists, social workers, audiologists, teachers of the visually impaired and deaf or hard of hearing, and orientation and mobility specialists. CTEC CAPS is part of the national CAPS network and offers bioscience, design, and emerging technologies strands built around projects with business partners.

Guidepost Montessori is a dedicated educational institution that embraces the unique needs of children from infancy through age 12, including those with diverse learning profiles such as language-based learning disabilities and twice-exceptional students. The school's mission centers on fostering a nurturing environment where each child can thrive in their current moment, emphasizing that education is not merely preparation for the future but a vital part of their present. Utilizing the time-tested Montessori methodology, Guidepost offers personalized learning experiences with a focus on child-paced development, hands-on materials, and one-on-one lessons tailored to individual needs. Key programs include immersive language options and a strong emphasis on independence, literacy, and numeracy skills. What sets Guidepost apart is its commitment to maintaining low student-teacher ratios, which fosters meaningful connections between educators and families. Additionally, the school provides extended-day care and operates year-round with minimal breaks, ensuring convenience for parents while prioritizing high-quality education. Phoenix Montessori has taught young children in Lenexa since 1991. Our program follows the educational philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, and our school leadership brings more than 30 years of Montessori teaching experience. Many of our staff have been with us for years, so children see familiar faces from one year to the next. We serve children ages 2.5 to 6 in preschool and kindergarten. Our classrooms are filled with hands-on Montessori materials, and children choose their work, move at their own pace and practice practical life skills every day, from caring for the room to early writing and math. Class sizes are small. Families can choose a half day from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. or a full day from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., with extended hours when space allows. Tuition is based on the nine-month school year, and enrollment starts with an application, followed by a campus visit and a family meeting.
