Curtistene S. McCowan Middle School

Curtistene S. McCowan Middle School in Glenn Heights carries the name of the first African-American elected to public office in DeSoto, in 1990. Until her passing in 2022, she visited campus for programs and events and greeted students in person on the first day of school each year.

We serve DeSoto ISD scholars in grades 6 to 8, and arts sit at the center of our curriculum. Our Fine Arts Academy is a school-within-a-school that accepts applicants for rising 6th to 8th graders, giving creative students a focused program in band, choir, visual arts and performing arts.

Beyond the arts, students can join honors academics, athletics, college and career readiness activities, computer technology and engineering, along with established clubs. Students with an idea for a new club can start one with staff help. DeSoto ISD athletics for grades 7 and up compete under the University Interscholastic League. Our counselors hold state certification and work with individuals and small groups on academic, career, personal and social goals.
