Nassau BOCES Carman Road School

At Carman Road School in Massapequa Park, we teach students ages 5 to 21 with multiple disabilities, including physical and developmental impairments and autism. Small classes bring academic learning, communication, social skills and daily living practice into the school day. Our teachers use visual supports, sensory activities and communication technology alongside individualized instruction.

Physical and occupational therapists, speech teachers, school psychologists, social workers and nursing staff work with our classroom teams. Related services include support within the classroom. Speech and language therapy uses core vocabulary, picture communication and augmentative and alternative communication devices. Physical therapy includes practice with gait trainers, standers, adapted tricycles and seating. Our occupational therapists use a sensory room and work on skills students need at school.

Students take part in adapted physical education, music and environmental lessons. Gardening in our greenhouse and on campus, caring for animals, and recycling are part of environmental education. In our Life Skills room, students practice laundry, folding clothes, setting a table, shopping and preparing a simple meal.

Middle and high school students use our Vocational Lab to practice sorting, collating, money skills and stocking the school store. Some students take part in community shopping or volunteer work; others practice job tasks within the school. Families participate in training and support groups and work with staff on their child's education.
