New Britain Special Education

Raymond Hill School is a private special education day school operated by Klingberg Family Centers in New Britain, Connecticut. It serves students in grades 1-12 who have special education needs including learning disabilities, behavioral challenges, ADHD, anxiety, mood disorders, and attachment issues. The school opened in 2004 and uses a therapeutic approach combining academics with vocational training and a restorative model based on attachment theory and positive behavioral interventions and supports. Students participate in hands-on vocational programs such as culinary arts, woodworking, automotive restoration, and graphic design. Speech and occupational therapy, psychiatric and psychological services are available on site. Placement is through school districts for day students. Families and districts work with the school for individualized education program goals in a supportive day program environment.

Solterra Academy is a therapeutic day school located at 300 John Downey Drive in New Britain, Connecticut. It provides comprehensive special education services to students ages 5 to 22 who require intensive intervention due to significant emotional, behavioral, cognitive, developmental, and/or learning challenges. The school is approved by the Connecticut State Department of Education and serves students with Autism Spectrum Disorders, Developmental Disabilities, Emotional Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities, Multiple Disabilities, Specific Learning Disabilities, Traumatic Brain Injury, and Other Health Impairments. The school offers elementary, middle, and high school classrooms with instruction aligned to Connecticut Common Core State Standards. Additional programs include vocational education, autism-specific programming, mental health services, physical and occupational therapy, and an extended school year program. A Flexible Learning Center supports high school students needing individualized credit recovery and flexible scheduling. Enrollment and placement occur through school districts via the Planning and Placement Team (PPT) process. Services are delivered by an interdisciplinary team including certified special education teachers, licensed clinicians, therapists, and support staff. Family involvement is emphasized, with counseling, parent education, and transition planning to foster independence and successful return to home school districts when appropriate.

ACES Educational Center for the Arts, at 55 Audubon Street in New Haven's Audubon Arts District, is a public, half-time magnet high school run by Area Cooperative Educational Services. We serve students from the 25 school districts in south central Connecticut and beyond. Our students study music, dance, theatre, creative writing, or visual arts alongside practicing artists, and our arts program includes multicultural and global citizenship education.
