About 430 students in transitional kindergarten through fifth grade attend Bijou Community School near the shore of Lake Tahoe, and every one of them learns in Spanish as well as English. The whole school runs a Two-Way Bilingual Immersion program aimed at bilingualism, biliteracy and sociocultural competence. In the primary grades we follow a 90:10 model, so most instruction starts in Spanish and the share of English grows each year. Each class holds roughly equal numbers of Spanish and English speakers, and teachers keep the two languages separate without translating. Families commit to at least six years, and the program continues in middle and high school toward the California State Seal of Biliteracy. Entry happens in TK or kindergarten through a lottery that splits seats evenly between English and Spanish speakers, with priority for siblings; students joining after first grade are assessed in Spanish. Our staff includes a counselor, a school psychologist, a nurse and special education instructional assistants. Fifth graders can play in strings or band, and after-school clubs include a choir, Kindness Club, Ballet Club, Bike Club and Junk Journal Club. District food services and transportation serve our families.
