About The Johnson Academy
For 20 years, The Johnson Academy has given South Orange County families a different option for bright children with dyslexia and related learning differences. We serve students in kindergarten through grade 8 and place them in classes by academic ability and social-emotional needs rather than by grade level.
Our day pairs a California State Standards curriculum with academic, auditory, and language-based interventions grounded in the science of reading. Each student receives close to an hour of Evidence-Based Intervention every school day, typically one-to-one, on top of regular academics. Classes are generally limited to five or six students, and our teachers and clinicians use structured literacy throughout.
Enrollment starts with assessments that identify each student's academic needs, followed by a parent review where we build an individualized education plan. Standardized assessments track progress through the year. We work alongside our affiliated Speech Language and Learning Center, which offers auditory therapies, reading interventions, math support, and articulation therapy.

California Online Public Schools has run tuition-free, WASC-accredited online public schools for students in TK through 12th grade since 2004. Our office on Valle Road in San Juan Capistrano serves families in Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, and Ventura counties, and more than 400 credentialed teachers work across our schools. Students learn through online courses supported by daily LiveClass sessions with their teachers, and high schoolers can take electives along with online health and P.E. We serve English learners in every grade through grade-level EL coordinators, and we offer clubs, field trips, college and career support, and social and emotional support. We enroll students with IEPs and 504 plans. After enrollment, our team holds an interim IEP meeting to review the student's previous IEP and determine placement in our parent-led independent study program. Capistrano Home/Virtual School
Capistrano Virtual School is the online independent study option for grades 6 to 8 in Capistrano Unified School District. Students learn from home with credentialed teachers directing the coursework and a parent or guardian guiding each day, and families can enroll at any point in the school year. A typical day is about four hours of work, roughly one hour each in English, math, science and social studies. Lessons run through Edgenuity and mix videos, activities, assignments, quizzes and unit exams, and teachers track progress and send feedback. Grades are credit or no credit, based on completed work and monthly turn-ins. Students who want some classroom time can take up to two classes at their neighborhood CUSD middle school. Our office is in the Thornsley Education Center on Calle Perfecto in San Juan Capistrano. Families receive a weekly Surf Report newsletter and an assignment calendar, along with optional workshops, field trips and activities. Students with an IEP need IEP team approval to enroll in independent study, and our staff coordinates SST and 504 plans.
