San Miguel Special Education

San Miguel Preschool houses seven special education classes for the Oxnard School District. Our preschool classes for children ages three to four are intensive and language-enriched, blending individual and small group services from a credentialed special education teacher, a speech-language pathologist and an occupational therapist. Para-educators trained and supervised by those providers and the district nurse support children throughout the day.

Classes meet Tuesday through Friday in morning (8:30 to 11:00) and afternoon (12:00 to 2:30) sessions. Children rotate through play-based centers for art, sensory work, fine motor skills and blocks, along with circle time, outdoor play and snack. Speech and occupational therapy happen inside the classroom, and our speech-language pathologist coaches social communication during recess and snack. We follow a research-based curriculum aligned with the California Preschool Learning Foundations, and in 2022 to 2023 we opened a communication classroom for children with severe speech delays.

Our Infant Program serves babies and toddlers from birth to three with vision, hearing or motor disorders through home visits and playgroups, in partnership with Tri-Counties Regional Center through California Early Start.
