About Whittier Area Cooperative Special Education Program
Whittier Area Cooperative Special Education Program (WACSEP) is a dedicated educational initiative serving students with disabilities across seven member districts in southeastern Los Angeles County. Established in 1971, WACSEP's core mission is to ensure that all students are recognized for their immeasurable worth and provided with the dignity and respect they deserve. The program emphasizes that every child can learn when understood within the context of their family and community, fostering a lifelong learning process that encourages higher expectations and achievements.
WACSEP offers a comprehensive range of services and programs tailored to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities. Key offerings include specialized educational support, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, and social skills groups. The program also provides resources for families, including information on parents' rights and procedural safeguards, as well as access to Family Empowerment Centers throughout California. Additionally, WACSEP is committed to early intervention through its Infant-Family Program, which supports families with infants aged 0-2, and offers guidance on special education assessments for students in private schools.
What sets WACSEP apart is its collaborative approach, serving a large community of approximately 40,640 students across 63 schools. The program maintains a focus on individualized education plans (IEPs) and employs specialized methodologies such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to promote effective learning. With a commitment to community integration and vocational training, WACSEP creates an inclusive environment that supports the growth and development of each student, ensuring they are well-prepared for future success.
